The world is on the brink of another global pandemic, and the signs are everywhere. From the alarming spread of diphtheria in Australia to the rapidly growing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, the threat of a global health crisis looms large. According to Professor Adrian Esterman, the chances of a pandemic as severe as COVID-19 breaking out in our lifetime are "very high." This is a stark reminder that we must prepare for the worst, even if we hope for the best. But what virus might be responsible for the next global pandemic? The H5N1 avian flu is a particular concern for epidemiologists. This strain has already killed millions of birds and infected other animals worldwide, and it has even started spreading from animals to humans. While no human-to-human transmissions have been reported yet, the human mortality rate is high, and Australia and Oceania remain the only regions free of the H5N1 strain. The good news is that there is a vaccine against it, and it's made by an Australian manufacturer. So, if H5N1 turns out to be the next pandemic, we would be well-prepared. But we can't afford to be complacent. The COVID-19 pandemic taught us that we need to be ready for anything. Australia now has its own Centre for Disease Control, purpose-built quarantine stations, a Moderna factory for vaccine production, and stockpiled drugs and equipment. We also have some experience managing a pandemic, which is a silver lining. However, Dr. Davoud Pourmarzi from the Australian National University warns that we may forget what we learned during COVID-19 if the next pandemic doesn't hit for 15 years or more. This is why it's crucial to include COVID-19 learnings in university curricula and continue developing and updating pandemic preparedness plans at all levels. But the threat isn't just about viruses. Declining vaccine coverage and trust in public health are causing smaller outbreaks of diseases like diphtheria, measles, and syphilis. Misinformation spread online hasn't helped the situation. So, what can we do to protect ourselves and others? Esterman advises that we shouldn't lose sleep over the risk of a major pandemic but instead take steps to protect ourselves from localized outbreaks. He's more worried about the drop in vaccine coverage, which is causing these smaller outbreaks. The CDC spokesperson echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that strong public health systems, informed communities, and high vaccination coverage are our best protections against future health threats. In conclusion, the threat of another global pandemic is real, and we must prepare for it. While we can't predict what virus will cause the next pandemic, we can prepare for it by strengthening our public health systems, updating our preparedness plans, and ensuring high vaccination coverage. It's a race against time, and we must not let our guard down.
